Davie Dog Park

Introduction

The Davie Dog Park webpage used to be located on the Yahoo Geocities site. But since Geocities is closing down in October 2009, I have transferred the files here for archival purposes.

Latest News

This section will be updated as news happens. Since the wheels of government move slowly, the updates may be few and far between.

August 17, 2009:

At the Davie Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting on 8-17-09, the director Dennis Andresky announced that a site plan will be developed by the town for a dog park in part of the Batten’s property. This is a proposed site, and the site plan is a preliminary steps to evaluating if this site is suitable.

The site plan will be presented at a future P&R meeting, perhaps in Sept. or Oct. 2009. To view agendas for upcoming meetings, see the Town of Davie website:

http://www.davie-fl.gov

The Batten site is located on Davie Road extension between Stirling Rd. and Griffin Road. It is about 10 acres and includes an existing building and parking lot. The building was the former fruit and vegetable market. The strawberry fields were under the electrical lines, which is FPL property.  The site was purchased by the town as part of the Open Space Bond initiative. One of the four goals of the bond is to maintain and improve existing parks.  The site is in District 2.

(Most of the following or maybe all was written by Tina, a member of the group.)

April 2007:

New locations continue to be suggested: The former Batten Farms location on Davie Road Ext., a place with about 5 acres off Flamingo Road, if the Spykes Grove site is bought with Open Space funds, a few acres could be used for a dog park – maybe near Griffin Road. Betty Booth Roberts park has been suggested, but the area is very small. Sites are still under discussion.

April 13, 2005:

The Town of Davie will be sponsoring a Dog Park Workshop on Monday April 11th, at 6:30 pm in the Town Council Chambers at Davie Town Hall.

The workshop is open to the public, and residents who would like a dog park in town are invited to attend and offer input.

March 30th, 2005:

This is a call to all crafters! We will have a table on the porch of the Davie Women’s Club during the Orange Blossom festival at the end of February. We could use any help that you could provide. We are expecting a good turn out and would like to create many items for sale before the festival. Funds raised will go toward our group registering for Not for Profit status with the State of Florida. (Update: This event gathered a lot of support for the dog park from residents and helped make a good impression on the town council!

How you can help:

  • Donate Craft supplies (fleece, thread, wooden forms, paint, etc.)
  • Help us make crafts. (We will sign off on Community Service Hours for students.)
  • Recommend locations to post flyers.
  • Ask local businesses for donations.
  • Contact us with any other suggestions that you may have.
  • Make copies of flyers and petitions.
  • Volunteer to attend the table during the festival.

Thank you for your support.

Once again we were well received by the Davie Town Council. Mayor Truex even thanked us for our persistence! The council has requested more information on locations from Town of Davie staff. Hopefully one of the locations will be acceptable.

Please continue to express your support of a dog park to your council members.

February 6th, 2005:

In our continuing effort to open a Dog Park in the Town of Davie, Marie, Sandra, Fran and Tina will be attending the Town Council Meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd.

Some of the topics we hope to discuss will include, what structures a dog park includes, cost analysis of current dog parks, what rules are standard in dog parks, and how liability issues can be handled effectively. Update: This event went well and was well received!

December 3rd, 2004:

On Wednesday, December 1, 2004, Marie, Tina, Fran, and Sandra all spoke before the Davie Town Council in support of a dog park in the Town of Davie. The council was presented with the most current petition, which included 216 signatures.

Our spoken presentations and petition were both well received by the Town Council and the Mayor. The Council members and the Mayor discussed various possibilities for the dog park. Some of the items discussed included using a section of Pine Island Park for the location, the problems with the potential sites suggested by the Parks and Recreation Committee, and the possibility of using a land grant to procure separate land for the dog park.

The Davie Town Council and the Mayor were very positive about our request for a dog park in Davie. However, no further action has been planned at this time. If you have not yet e-mailed your council member, please do so now. A strong and consistent show of resident support is the only way to make this park a possibility.

The next Town Council Meeting is on, Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at 7:00pm. Attendance this meeting could mean a big difference to our cause. Please e-mail Davie Dog Park if you want to speak at this open forum meeting, so that we can coordinate our efforts.

If you will not be able to attend this meeting, you can let your council member know how you feel by e-mailing them directly. Please see the town website for new council members’ and mayor contact information.

Many Davie residents expressed their support for a dog park in Davie November 20th and 21st at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. During the craft show, we gathered additional signatures, added more members to our e-mail list, and sold craft items to raise funds.

This show of resident support is both encouraging and important.

November 20th – 21st, 2004:

We will have a table, located near the Bandstand, at the 23rd Annual Holiday Craft & Plant Fair! Come see us for Free Face Painting! We’ll have Holiday Ornaments for sale. Come support us. Let your voice be heard!

Exciting News! The Town of Davie Parks and Recreation committee met on Monday, November 08, 2004. They have chosen four possible locations for the dog park:

Wolf Lake Park, 37 acres, half of that area is lake, east of University, between Griffin & Stirling.

Sunny Lake Park, 17 acres, near Griffin and the Turnpike. (Update 4-07: this has been designated as a bird sanctuary.)

The Parks and Recreations committee will send this list to the town council. This does not mean that the dog park is definitely happening. It simply means that these four sites made the most sense to the Parks and Recreations committee, out of all the possible locations in Davie.

In order to assure the future existence of a dog park in Davie, we must all keep the Davie Town Council aware of our continued interest. For more information on Davie Town Council Meetings times, locations and procedures see the town of Davie website.

Get Involved:

  • Attend Parks & Recreation meetings at Robbins Lodge, located on Hiatus Road. The meetings are held the third Monday of each month, unless extenuating circumstances require a change in date. See the  Davie town website for the latest calendar with meeting dates.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Davie Dog Park Workshop! We were, once again, very well received by the Mayor and the Town Council. Several residents spoke during the workshop regarding their preferences for location, size, and features of the proposed park.

While some members of council seemed to be hoping for a quick resolution to this situation, Mayor Truex seemed to think that a bit of a wait would lead to a better Dog Park in Davie. The Mayor is willing to support a Dog Park for Davie in next year’s capital budget.

Please continue to support our efforts by:

  • Contacting your council member regarding any possible location for a Dog Park
  • Remaining aware of what is happening with the open space bond and park funds (The Open Space Advisory board and Parks & Recreation boards meet monthly at Robbins Lodge park on Hiatus Road; the meetings are open to the public – add your input!)
  • Continuing to collect signatures and create awareness
  • Contact us with any questions or ideas
  • Visiting the Davie Dog Park site and local news sites and the Davie town website regularly for news and events updates

Thank you again for all of your support!
